MORGEN MILLS
I’m a lot of things: literary person, archives person, business person, chess person, community person, family person, queer person, Labrador person. Definitely a person!
I’ve worked in archives and libraries for many years, specializing in records management and development, particularly in the North. With Mark Turner, I co-own the Labrador-based company Brack and Brine, which is both a community records consultancy and a commercial publishing house.
Remotely Useful gives a good sense of our philosophy and expertise when it comes to records and archival development in the North, and the award-winning Labrador Cinema is a great example of our work to mobilize and celebrate community records (in this case, Labrador’s film history).
My primary personal vocation is literature. I have participated in nearly every aspect of the book industry: publishing, writing, editing, reading, reviewing, studying, teaching, designing, laying out, copy-editing, indexing, recording, researching, planning, illustrating, launching, promoting, selling, distributing…
I have written for various Labradorian and provincial periodicals, including Them Days (where I was also guest editor in 2021), the former Labrador Life, The Independent (St. John’s), Newfoundland Quarterly, and Newfoundland and Labrador Studies (where I am also one of the book review editors). In the academic world, I’ve published or contributed to peer-reviewed papers in various fields, from literature to waste management to molecular biology.
I’ve played for the Canadian national women’s chess team, and I hold the Woman FIDE Master (WFM) title. I have won the Toronto Open and the NL Open and finished in the top ten in Canadian championships (both open and women’s sections). Two of my best games include a win over FM Robert Hamilton at the 2011 Canadian Championship and a win over WIM Kristýna Petrová of Czechia at the 2022 International Chess Olympiad.
Neither last nor least, I’m a proud queer and transgender woman. Directly or indirectly, our identities influence all we do.
Life is a collaboration. Email me if you want to work together.
